A digital data radio network is only an asset if it is reliable and secure. Many factors can prevent a radio network from not performing at the optimum level. Damaged cables or antennas, poor installation, extreme temperatures or incorrect voltage supply to name but a few. It is normally the case that a problem on a data radio network increases in severity to a point where it starts affecting the integrity of the data communications. An early warning alarm therefore would allow these potential problems to be identified and corrected long before system performance is affected. This is the functionality that the Radius RND 100 provides.
Non-Intrusive Diagnostics
In conjunction with the PDR range of digital data radios, the RND 100 is a stand-alone mini SCADA package which captures the real time data encapsulated in the PDR data radio transmissions and presents this data to the user in a graphical real time and historical format. Users can set alarms for early warning of problems with the RSSI (Receiver Signal Strength Indication), main or battery voltage supply, power output or temperature at the remote site.
A topological display of the radio network is presented and a series of colour coding for the remote data radio sites is shown giving a quick reference to the status of the network. Audible alarms will appear if all is not well in the system and the user can then click on a unit and look at all its historical data in order to establish trends and what remedial action is required. The ease of use means a user can add or remove remote data radio outstations at any time.
On-line Maintenance and Measurement
If a problem is identified, the user can perform a number of remote measurements and commands to and from the PDR remote data radio outstations. A communications test will show the RSSI and power levels on each of the communication paths, including those via repeaters. Should the power need to be increased at a site to compensate for a problem, this can be achieved remotely without having to visit the site. And ultimately if you need to change frequency of the entire network, due to interference or regulator changes, then it is just a click of a mouse away, rather than several hours or even days having to physically reach all the remote outstation sites.
